Rocket League's Going A Bit Post-Apocalyptic

Two cars enter, one car leaves!

Rocket League [official site] is, of course, set in the brightest of utopias, when we have all transcended flesh to gambol and frolic as sentient cars. But what if it were a bad future, what if everything were all rusty and had sand and all that bad future stuff? You'll see soon, as developers Psyonix today announced Chaos Run, a new DLC pack with grim, grimy new cards, decals, wheels, and other customisation bits. It'll arrive this December alongside a free update adding a new footie arena for everyone, the dusty Wasteland - the game's first 'non-standard' pitch. Have a look:

Wasteland's based on a map of the same name from Psyonix's Rocket League precursor, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. Psyonix describe it as having "a completely-sloped perimeter, entirely different Boost placements, and a much more prominent, physically-wider pitch." It's all very Mad Max-y, but can't we get beyond Thunderdome? Psyonix say on the PlayStation Blog that they're planning many more "unusual" maps, and weirder ones too.

As for Chaos Run, it'll cost $3.99 and Psyonix say it'll get you these shinies:

  • 2 New Battle-Cars, Ripper and Grog
  • 12 New Decals (six for each new Battle-Car)
  • 2 New Paint Types (Camo and Sun-Damaged)
  • 2 New Wheels (Ripper and Grog)
  • 2 New Rocket Trails (Sandstorm, Nuts and Bolts)
  • 3 New Toppers (Boombox, Cow Skull, Mohawk)
  • 3 New Antennas (Bomb Pole, Radioactive, Retro Ball - Wasteland)
  • 5 New Achievements

I do like this pattern of releasing free things and mostly-cosmetic paid bits. That approach kept Killing Floor rolling in updates for yonks, and it's (mostly) worked with Payday 2 too. Folks keep coming back to see what's new then realise that yes, they absolutely do want a hot pink mohawk for their sportcar.
