The joy of bestiaries

One of my minor hobbies is reading medieval writings on animals. Here's an example of the sort of unbeatable bear lore you're missing out on by not doing this:

"The bear gets its Latin name 'ursus' because it shapes its cubs with its mouth, from Latin word 'orsus'. For they are said to give birth to shapeless lumps of flesh, which the mother licks into shape. The bear's tongue forms the young which it brings forth. But this is because they are born before they are mature: the birth is only thirty days after conception, and this hasty fertility creates unformed young. The bear's head is weak, and its greatest power is in its arms and loins; for this reason they often walk upright."
