10 years later: the passage of time in Final Fantasy XV

Fade to black

Final Fantasy XV wants the prestige of an epic without doing any of the legwork. I’m enjoying this seafood-filled photography sim for reasons my conscious mind cannot determine. But even the subliminal idiot hiding in my brain can’t ignore the stupidity of the game’s story, and the maddening way that story is told (spoilers incoming). It’s a shifty, side-winding adventure that makes no effort to explain itself. The question I’ve blurted at the screen most often is: “WHY?” Square Enix’s designers and writers won’t answer that question. “Why” doesn’t interest them. But they will tell you “when”. It’s usually “the next day”. Or “two days later”. Or even “ten years later”.
