The best Genshin Impact Traveler (Anemo) build

Learn how to put together the best possible Anemo Traveler build in Genshin Impact

Want to learn how to create the best build for the Anemo Traveler in Genshin Impact? The Traveler's Anemo elemental vision is their first power, the one you gain early on in Genshin Impact's tutorial. The Anemo Traveler is also the only free-to-play Anemo character in the game, which can make it the most desirable vision to keep on them by default, even though their base stats are pretty weak with this element equipped.

On this page, we'll give a detailed rundown of the best build for the Traveler (Anemo) in Genshin Impact, including their best party composition, weapons and artifacts, talent priority, and a full list of their required levelling materials.

How to build the Anemo Traveler for sub-DPS/elemental support in Genshin Impact

Best weapon: Skyward Blade

Alternative: Favonius Sword

The Skyward Blade ticks all the boxes for the Anemo Traveler: it comes with a built-in increase in crit rate, and using the Traveler's elemental burst with this sword equipped triggers an effect called Skypiercing Might. This boosts their movement and attack speeds by 10%, along with their normal and charged attack damage on a sliding scale of 20-40% based on the weapon's level, for 12 seconds after the burst is activated. It's undeniably the best of both worlds for the Anemo Traveler.

However, Skyward Blade is a 5-star weapon, and you might well not be in a position to give your starter character such a high-rarity sword. In that case, the Favonius Sword makes for a decent 4-star substitute: with it, critical hits have a high chance to generate an elemental particle that will restore six energy to the Traveler's Anemo reserves. It's not quite as flashy as the 5-star alternative, but not bad at all given the relative ease of obtaining it.

Best artifacts: Viridescent Venerer

Alternative: 2 pieces each from Viridescent Venerer and Noblesse Oblige

For the Anemo Traveler, there really is no better choice of artifact set than going all in on Viridescent Venerer. This set specifically buffs Anemo elemental powers and is already very effective with just two pieces equipped, giving a +15% bonus to all Anemo attacks. The set really sings at four pieces, though, where in addition to the benefits of the two-piece bonus, Swirl damage is increased by a whopping 60%.

If you're struggling to pull enough Viridescent Venerer pieces together in one go, you can subtitute a couple for pieces from the Noblesse Oblige set while you hunt down the rest. That way you'll still get the +15% Anemo DMG bonus from Viridescent Venerer, along with a none-too-shabby +20% Elemental Burst DMG bonus from Noblesse Oblige which at least approximates a weakened version of the four-piece bonus outlined above.

Keep an eye out for the following stats and substats on your Anemo Traveler's artifacts to really maximise this build:

  • Circlet of Logos: CRITs
  • Sands of Eon: Energy Recharge
  • Goblet of Eonothem: Anemo DMG Bonus
  • Substats: Energy Recharge and CRITs

Talent priority: Palm Vortex (Elemental Skill)

Secondary: Gust Surge (Elemental Burst)

The Anemo Traveler's elemental skill is their best talent, both for its use in combat and its utility in puzzle-solving. When choosing what to prioritise next, their elemental burst has more damage potential than their normal attack. The latter should only be a focus if you particularly want to fall back on their sword attacks when performing the sub-DPS role.

Uniquely amongst all Genshin Impact characters, the Traveler does not possess a passive utility talent. Here is a full list of the Traveler's Anemo talents:

  • Foreign Ironwind (Normal Attack):
    • Normal Attack: Performs up to 5 rapid strikes.
    • Charged Attack: Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to unleash 2 rapid sword strikes.
    • Plunging Attack: Plunges from mid-air to strike the ground below, damaging opponents along the path and dealing AoE DMG upon impact.
  • Palm Vortex (Elemental Skill): Grasping the wind's might, the Traveler forms a vortex of vacuum in their palm, causing continuous Anemo DMG to opponents in front of them. The vacuum vortex explodes when the skill duration ends, causing a greater amount of Anemo DMG over a larger area. Hold for gradual increase in DMG and AoE. If the vortex comes into contact with Hydro/Pyro/Cryo/Electro elements, it will deal additional elemental DMG of that type. Elemental Absorption may only occur once per use.
  • Gust Surge (Elemental Burst): Guiding the path of the wind currents, the Traveler summons a forward-moving tornado that pulls objects and opponents towards itself, dealing Anemo DMG each 0.5 seconds, 9 times. Elemental If the vortex comes into contact with Hydro/Pyro/Cryo/Electro elements, it will deal 30.7% additional elemental DMG of that type. Elemental Absorption may only occur once per use.
  • Slitting Wind (1st Ascension Passive): The last hit of a Normal Attack combo unleashes a wind blade, dealing 60% of ATK as Anemo DMG to all opponents in its path.
  • Second Wind (4th Ascension Passive): Palm Vortex kills regenerate 2% HP for 5 seconds. This effect can only occur once every 5s.

Party composition

  • DPS: Fischl
  • Sub-DPS: Xingqiu
  • Sub-DPS/Support: Anemo Traveler
  • Healer/Sub-DPS: Bennett

5-star alternative: Ganyu replacing Fischl as DPS

Thanks to the Anemo Traveler's versatility, they make an effective sub-DPS in almost any team that contains Hydro, Pyro, Electro, or Cryo characters. Fischl is a strong choice for a 4-star DPS character with the Electro element, although a 5-star Cryo character like Ganyu makes for an excellent alternative.

Crucially though, consider putting Hydro-wielding Xingqiu and Pyro healer Bennett in co-sub-DPS positions. The key here is opening up the most powerful possible combination of elemental reactions, which can then be spread over a wider area using the Anemo Traveler's Swirl reaction.

How to level up the Anemo Traveler in Genshin Impact

Talents

To fully level up any one of the Anemo Traveler's talents, you'll need to collect the following materials. Note that you'll need to do all this three times if you want to triple crown the Anemo Traveler's active talents; and, furthermore, that talent levelling does not carry over between the Traveler's various elemental forms.

Talent Level (+ required Ascension Level)Materials
2 (2)6 Divining Scrolls, 3 Teachings of Freedom, and 12,500 Mora
3 (3)3 Sealed Scrolls, 2 Guides to Resistance, and 17,500 Mora
4 (3)4 Sealed Scrolls, 4 Guides to Ballad, and 25,000 Mora
5 (4)6 Sealed Scrolls, 6 Guides to Freedom, and 30,000 Mora
6 (4)9 Sealed Scrolls, 9 Guides to Resistance, and 37,500 Mora
7 (5)4 Forbidden Curse Scrolls, 4 Philosophies of Ballad, 1 Dvalin's Sigh, and 120,000 Mora
8 (5)6 Forbidden Curse Scrolls, 6 Philosophies of Freedom, 1 Dvalin's Sigh, and 260,000 Mora
9 (6)9 Forbidden Curse Scrolls, 12 Philosophies of Resistance, 2 Dvalin's Sighs, and 450,000 Mora
10 (6)12 Forbidden Curse Scrolls, 16 Philosophies of Ballad, 2 Dvalin's Sighs, 1 Crown of Insight, and 700,000 Mora
Total6 Divining Scrolls, 22 Sealed Scrolls, 31 Forbidden Curse Scrolls, 3 Teachings of Freedom, 6 Guides to Freedom, 11 Guides to Resistance, 4 Guides to Ballad, 6 Philosophies of Freedom, 12 Philosophies of Resistance, 20 Philosophies of Ballad, 6 Dvalin's Sighs, 1 Crown of Insight, and 1,652,500 Mora

Note that the Anemo and Geo Traveler builds have the same talent levelling requirements, but you still need to treat their talents and levels as completely separate (which includes collecting all these materials individually for both elements, unfortunately.)

Constellations

Because there are no duplicate copies of the Traveler available to wish for in the gacha or purchase from Paimon's store, you need to use a unique method to obtain their Constellations. For the Anemo Traveler, this means collecting and consuming a level-up material called Memory of Roving Gales.

There are only six Memories of Roving Gales in the entire game, which luckily is just enough to reach the Traveler's final Anemo Constellation. They are obtained in the following ways: two are granted upon completing Acts II and III of the Prologue of the main questline; one can be purchased with 225 Anemo Sigils from the Souvenir Shop in Mondstadt; and you'll receive the other three after reaching Adventure Ranks 27, 37, and 46 on your account.

Here's a list of all the Traveler's Anemo constellations and what they do:

  • Raging Vortex (C1): Palm Vortex pulls in opponents and objects within a 5m radius.
  • Uprising Whirlwind (C2): Increases Energy Recharge by 16%.
  • Sweeping Gust (C3): Increases the Level of Gust Surge by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.
  • Cherishing Breezes (C4): Reduces DMG taken while casting Palm Vortex by 10%.
  • Vortex Stellaris (C5): Increases the Level of Palm Vortex by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.
  • Intertwined Winds (C6): Targets who take DMG from Gust Surge have their Anemo RES decreased by 20%. If an Elemental Absorption occurred, then their RES towards the corresponding Element is also decreased by 20%.

Now that you know all about how to build the Anemo Traveler in Genshin Impact, you might be curious about how they compare to some of the other Anemo characters in the game. For a couple of 4-star support/sub-DPS characters who pack an air-blasting punch, I recommend Sucrose and Shikanoin Heizou!
