How to play Connections

Connections is one of the most popular (and challenging) daily puzzle games published by the New York Times (owners of Wordle). The aim of Connections is to group the 16 words of the day into four groups, where each group of four words has a common theme.

For instance, the words "Hook", "Nana", "Peter", and "Wendy" are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, "Action", "Ballpark", "Go", and "Stick" are all words which commonly come just before the word "Figure".

Your job is to figure out what these themes are that connect the various words together - but be wary, because a lot of the time there are deceptive red herring connections placed purely to throw you off! To win the game, you have to find all four Connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is revealed automatically.

Each of the four groups in each day's Connections puzzle is also assigned a different colour, which represents how easy or difficult the Connection is to find. These colours are: Yellow (Easiest), Green (Easy), Blue (Medium), and Purple (Hardest).

What is today's Connections answer?

Here is the answer to today's Connections puzzle on Tuesday, 22nd April:

• Yellow: Cancel, As A Project (Axe, Cut, Drop, Scrap)
• Green: Seen In A Pottery Studio (Clay, Glaze, Kiln, Wheel)
• Blue: Things That Are Slippery (Banana Peel, Eel, Grease, Ice)
• Purple: Natural Producers Of Heat (Fire, Lightning, Sun, Volcano)

This edition of Connections was on the easier side for me. If you've watched a decent number of cartoons, 'slippery' is the first thing you think of when seeing 'banana peel', isn't it? It was easy to add 'grease' and 'ice' to that list, but I needed a second to realise it wasn't about 'stuff you can step on' - just all things slippery, including eel.

I found the purple theme particularly straightforward. Instead of the usual hidden words, missing letters, tricky trivia, and secondary meanings, it was just a straight up 'hot things' today. The green group was actually harder for me as I didn't think of pottery right away. I wasn't even sure to include 'wheel', but eventually it was the only thing left that made sense.

It was nice to solve a relatively simple Connections puzzle for once, but I've a feeling this won't become a trend - tomorrow we'll see!
