  5. Congalala's attacks are obvious, so keep an eye out for major openings.

Where to find Congalala

The Congalala is found in the Forest region of Monster Hunter Wilds, often on elevated ground or in a body of water. The first time you'll run into the Congalala is during the Chapter 1-3 main quest "To the Forest", shortly after defeating the Lala Barina. Keep an eye out around areas 2, 12, and 13 of your map; I've often found the Congalala meandering around there.

Congalala weaknesses

The Congalala's weak points are its head and rear. Basically, focus on where it farts and burps for maximum damage output. Physical damage is most effective, and so any weapons that deal Cut, Blunt, or Ammo Damage work well. You can also focus on the left and right forelegs, which often have wounds appear over the course of a fight.

The Congalala isn't resistant to any Element, but neither is it especially vulnerable to Elemental attacks aside from Fire, which can serve up additional damage if you target its head. If you don't have Fire at your disposal, Ice is an okay replacement.

Since you'll be dealing with Stench during this fight, it's fair play to use status effects against the Congala as revenge. There's no real stand-out here - everything from Poison to Exhaust works decently. For traps, use Flash Pods, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps to immobilise the Congalala and put a temporary end to its gas attacks. Don't bother with Sonic Bombs, which have no effect.

Best weapon and armor to fight Congalala

Grab anything that deals potent physical damage to cut the Congalala down to size. The Sword and Shield, Hammer, and Lance all work well for delivering the massive strikes you need to break this beast's backside, but if you'd rather be out of Stench range, a distance weapon like the Bow is also good.

You've defeated the Quematrice by now, so it's worth building a weapon from the Quematrice Tree for Fire damage - for instance, the Quematrice Arco I, which will let you comfortably shoot from afar with some potent flames to light up all those farts. Or, you can smash the Congalala's head in with something from the Bone Tree, like a good old fashioned Bone Bludgeon II.

As for armor, anything that gives you Stench Resistance is good, but chances are you might not have such pieces the first time you fight the Congalala. I personally like wearing the Lala Barina set during this battle; since why not look especially pretty while this ape gasses you?

Congalala tips and strategy

Below, we'll go in-depth with the main tips and overall strategy you need to beat the Congalala. Follow these hints closely to win the fight and claim the spoils of war with ease.

1. Dodge the farts and the burps

The Congalala will probably open up the fight by letting loose a huge fart stream in your general direction. Learn the telltale wiggle of the rear and the lurching forward motion that accompanies this impressive display of butt power. You should also observe the Congalala prior to a burp, as the gorilla will always make a heaving sound. Roll to the monster's sides when these attacks emerge.

2. If you get hit with Stench, use a Deodorant or evade in water

You'll suffer the Stench status effect if you end up on the receiving end of a burp or toot. This is an annoying effect that keeps you from healing, which can be a real pain especially at the end of the fight, when Congalala's attacks get faster and more furious. Use a Deodorant immediately to remove Stench, or find a body of water and roll around in it to make the smell go away. If you're playing solo, your Palico will hopefully come to your rescue here with a Deodorant delivery.

3. Though the head and butt are dangerous, they're also major weak points

With great risk comes great reward, the saying goes. In the case of fighting the Congalala, the risk is sticking close to its cranium and posterior for major damage potential while also avoiding the burp and fart streams. The Congalala will try to distract you from its weak points by occasionally running into packs of Congas, its smaller cousins. These weaker mobs will get in your way, so finish them posthaste and continue your strikes on the head and butt.

4. Focus on the tail and forelegs for additional damage

Slash away at the tail and forelegs whenever the Congalala is unleashing its gas for damage that isn't quite as potent, but does add up over time. Wounds will appear on these body parts frequently, so when that tail lights red, focus on it to deliver a potent strike that'll knock the Congalala onto its back.

5. Congalala's attacks are obvious, so keep an eye out for major openings

In many ways, this combat serves as another tutorial quest in teaching you how to read a monster's movements. We've already mentioned the butt wiggle and heaving sounds that accompany the Congalala's flatulence, but you should also observe the monster's flurry attack, where the Congalala claws at you four times before falling over. This is a major opening, so don't fail to take advantage of it.
