Subnautica's ending felt like leaving home
So long and thanks for all the fish
Spoilers, obv.
When you build your first shiny underwater base in Subnautica, the robotic voice of your PDA computer crackles to life. "Treat this space like your home," it suggests. "But never forget that it is not." It's told as a Portal-like joke. Your PDA is a jobsworthy machine reminding you it is your duty is to return to the corporate planets of your previous life, to pay your debts and continue the work of a company man. In the final moments of this superb splash 'em up, I remembered those words not with humour, but with sadness. It was time to go back, even if the salty water of this planet now felt like where I belonged.
