Wondering how to get through the Flaming Door in Chapter 2 of Doom: The Dark Ages? The 20-odd expansive levels of Doom: The Dark Ages house a number of hidden areas, some much more secretive than others. The majority of these areas in the first couple of chapters aren't too tricky to find, but if you're reading this, you'll likely have already found the exception: a doorway towards the end of Hebeth which is engulfed in perpetual flames that deny all entry.
In this quick step-by-step guide, we'll show you exactly how to open the Flaming Door by first turning off the flames via another hard-to-reach area nearby. With the flames off, you'll be able to reach the secret area behind and reap the rewards that follow - and ensure your 100% run through Doom: The Dark Ages remains untarnished!
How to open the Flaming Door in Doom: The Dark Ages
To open the Flaming Door towards the end of Chapter 2, you must enter the room opposite and turn the valve inside that room. Interacting with this valve will extinguish the flames and allow entry into the secret area behind the door. Follow the steps below to get into this room and solve the puzzle!
Flaming Door puzzle solution:
- Look at the wall to the right of the door opposite the Flaming Door.
- Throw your Shield Saw at the superheated metal lock on the wall.
- Vault up into the room and onto the lower level.
- Find the valve below the hole in the wall.
- Interact with the valve to extinguish the flames.
- Shield Charge through the door and approach the Flaming Door to open it.

1. Look at the wall to the right of the door opposite the Flaming Door
Starting from the Flaming Door, turn around and face the closed door opposite. In the room behind that door is the valve you need to find. Partway up the wall to the right of that door, you'll find the hidden entrance to this room.
2. Throw your Shield Saw at the superheated metal lock on the wall
As you've been shown previously in Chapter 2, throw your Shield Saw at the superheated metal lock on the wall to break it open, allowing you entrance into the upper level of the room.
3. Vault up into the room and onto the lower level
You can either vault straight up into the room or use the nearby ledge to jump across. Either way, once you're inside, hop down onto the lower level, where you'll find various pickups on the ground.
4. Find the valve below the hole in the wall
Next to the door is a hole in the wall, and below it is the crucial and easily missed key to this whole puzzle: an unassuming valve.
5. Interact with the valve to extinguish the flames
Follow the on-screen prompt once you're at the valve to interact with it, at long last extinguishing the flow of flames that guard the Flaming Door.
6. Shield Charge through the door and approach the Flaming Door to open it
That's the puzzle solved! Now all you need to do is Shield Charge through the exit and enter the secret area guarded by the once fiery doorway. The door will open at your approach now that the flames are gone.
What's behind the Flaming Door?
Alas, the reward for completing such an infernal early puzzle isn't enormous. Behind the Flaming Door is a small corridor heading left, with a few Gold pickups on the floor adding up to a total of 9x Gold. As you walk a little way down the corridor, the door at the end will burst open and a Hell Knight will attack you. Dispatch him with extreme sanguinity, then head through the door to find a Life Sigil.
You can then exit out the other side via another breakable door. Shield Charge through the door, and you'll be back out in the open near where that pesky Flaming Door once resided, ready to continue along your path of mindless destruction through Hebeth.
