Where to find Doshaguma

The Doshaguma is found in the Plains and Forest regions of Monster Hunter Wilds. The first time you'll run into the Doshaguma in the story of Monster Hunter Wilds is during the Chapter 1-4 main quest "A Hunter's Pride," where you'll enter combat with an Alpha Doshaguma and its pack. Technically, though, I encountered several Doshagumas ahead of time while tracking the Quematrice, as the pair of them tend to get into turf wars. Doshaguma can frequently be found wandering Areas 8 through 12 of the Plains. In the Forest, the Doshaguma tends to pop up around Area 10, not too far from the river.

Doshaguma weaknesses

The Doshaguma's weak point is its soft belly. To reach the belly, you'll need to attack it when the Doshaguma rises on its hind legs. This isn't always possible, so when the belly's not visible, attack the head and forelegs, which are breakable. The tail's also breakable, but isn't particularly weak. Focus on physical damage for maximum impact. Cut Damage works best on all of the aforementioned body parts, with Blunt Damage serving as a good runner-up.

Fire and Thunder are both decent Elements to use against the Doshaguma, and you'll find once again that the head is the most receptive body part for soaking up this damage. Avoid using the Dragon Element on the tail, as for some reason the Doshaguma is especially resistant to dragon attacks on its rump. Who knew?

Most status effects are fair game against the Doshaguma, and the first time you run into one of these big fellas, you'll probably be able to take advantage of Paralysis, Poison, or Stun, which will occur when you whack them on the head enough with a Blunt weapon. Pick Flash Pods, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps for your items, along with Dung Pods and Large Dung Pods, which will come in handy for fending off Doshaguma packs.

Best weapon and armor to fight Doshaguma

I used the Dual Blades and Lance to carve up my first Doshaguma, but you can go with whatever Cut or Blunt weapon works best for your playstyle. The Hammer would be an easy choice for inflicting Stun.

By the time I was hunting Doshagumas, the Barina Faucilles I and Barina Sarissa I were my regular companions, thanks to their affinity with the Paralysis Element. You could also use the Quematrice Silexes I and Quematrice Lanza I, both of which are great for additional Fire damage.

When it comes to armor, just invest in whatever offers up the most physical protection at this point in the game. If you're going to start farming Doshaguma en masse, it's also good to start upgrading your armor, which you can begin doing shortly after you beat the Alpha Doshaguma in the story.

Doshaguma tips and strategy

Below, we'll go in-depth with the main tips and overall strategy you need to beat the Doshaguma. Follow these hints closely to win the fight and claim the spoils of war with ease.

1. Keep applying pressure and dodging

The Doshaguma's a violent beast and probably the most overtly aggressive in Monster Hunter Wilds' first chapter. Prepare yourself for heavy paw strikes that will knock you off your feet, and be aware that defeating the Doshaguma is largely an exercise in attrition and careful dodging.

If you're using a guarding weapon (the Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Lance, Gunlance, Charge Blade, and Heavy Bowgun), chances are the Doshaguma will instigate a Power Clash against you when you block one of its attacks. Mash your attack button as fast as you can when this happens to knock the Doshaguma backwards.

2. When the Doshaguma growls or rears up, an attack is imminent

Most of the Doshaguma's attacks will be telegraphed either by a growl or by the giant bear rearing up on its hind legs. Attacks - either in the form of the Doshaguma slamming its body down on the nearby terrain, swinging its arm outwards, or charging forward - are all imminent once this happens. The terrain smash attack is particularly deadly, as it'll send rifts through the ground that the Doshaguma will then pull up, knocking you off your feet. Learn these telltale signs well. Take advantage of the opportunity to attack the Doshaguma's belly as it rears up, but don't get greedy. Switch to attacking the forelimbs to avoid being trampled.

3. Exploit wounds as soon as they appear

Once the Doshaguma's health is low, lots of wounds will appear on its body. You should always focus on wounds and attack them as soon as they appear with every monster, but it's especially vital to do so with the Doshaguma for both the big damage and the chance to quell its outbursts, which become more and more aggressive the weaker it gets. Since the Doshaguma's weak spot is located under its body and is often inaccessible as long as the creature's upright, it's even more imperative to exploit its wounds ASAP.

4. Take advantage of turf wars to deal extra damage to the Doshaguma

The Doshaguma tends to get involved in turf wars on a regular basis. If you're fighting the Alpha Doshaguma in the main story, it'll probably end up clashing with either a Rey Dau or a Balahara as you chase it across the sands. Normal Doshagumas encountered during regular hunts will fiercely defend their lairs against any who come close, and spotting a Doshaguma dueling with a Quematrice is a regular sight for me. While you don't want to take on more than you can chew in a fight with two monsters, it's always worth smacking a Doshaguma a few times when it's distracted with another alpha.

5. If a Doshaguma pack enters the fray, use Dung Pods to make them disperse

Facing off against the Alpha Doshaguma in Monster Hunter Wilds' campaign will give you a good idea of how Doshaguma packs work. One of these furry bastards is enough to deal with; you don't want to fend off an entire trove of them. Ensure that you're well-prepared by packing Dung Pods and Large Dung Pods before a hunt. Fling the poop at the pack to make it disperse, then refocus your efforts on the big guy you've been contending with.
