New Ecosystems walkthrough

New Ecosystems objectives

  • Talk to Alma
  • Survey the Scarlet Forest
    • Optional: Talk to the Wudwuds 0/3
  • View the forest from atop a tree
  • Capture a Yian Kut-Ku

The latest adventure takes us to the Scarlet Forest to check on how it's doing and our friends, the Wudwuds. Before venturing off, you can resupply grabbing Nulberries, Flash Pods, Scream Bombs, Dung Pods, and traps. You can also bring any of the three elements for more damage: Water, Ice, Thunder.

Once you're ready, it's time to find the Wudwuds. As always, they use their talent for explaining creatures to tell us about the Yian Kut-Ku monsters nearby. And similar to our first encounter with the Congalala, they don't let you set an ambush.

Tips for the Yian Kut-Ku fight

Use Dung Pods to get rid of the extra two Yian Kut-Kus so you can prioritise the main one. And remember what Alma said - your goal is to capture. If you're not sure how to capture monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, here's a quick explainer. First, damage the monster until they have a floating skull icon above their icon on the minimap. If your Palico is with you, they'll point out that the monster is weak.

Second, get them into a trap. It doesn't matter if it's a trap your Palico places, a Vine Trap in the environment, or one you place. As long as the monster is vulnerable to it, it works. Then, use two Tranq Bombs while standing close to the trapped monster. That's all there is to capturing monsters.

Now let's get into tips for the actual fight! Despite being a wyvern, the Yian Kut-Ku is quite a small monster to fight. This makes it easy to pummel any part of them, such as their breakable head or mouth weak point.

Aside from generic attacks, the Yian Kut-Ku spits fireballs when enraged. This can be one fireball, shooting multiple from left to right, or charging at you while spitting fireballs. This is their main behaviour where they'll try to inflict Fireblight. As long as you avoid the fireballs and use the environment to your advantage, you should be okay.

Capturing the Yian Kut-Ku completes Chapter 4-1 and the main mission, New Ecosystems. This unlocks high-rank environments where you'll find tougher monsters in each area now. Continue onto the Chapter 4-2 walkthrough for tips on increasing your Hunter Rank. Or you can return to the walkthrough hub for many of our guides.
