What is the best Heavy Bowgun in Monster Hunter Wilds? The Heavy Bowgun is what you get when you take a nippy little Light Bowgun, add a whole load more firepower, and then give it a Lance's shield. HBGs can unleash a colossal amount of damage in a short space of time once you know what you're doing with them, and if you really want to max out your damage then you should know which final-form upgrades to work towards in the Heavy Bowgun weapon tree.

In this guide, you'll find our picks for the three best, most powerful Heavy Bowguns in Monster Hunter Wilds. These choices are all final-form upgrades which take into account every HBG's raw damage, skills, magazine types, affinity, and more.

The Ableben Abzug is a Piercing damage monster. Found at the end of the Gore Magala tree (which is a little annoying since you have to work your way through the Rathian and Gravios trees to get there), this powerful Heavy Bowgun features very high affinity and good stats across the board, along with Lv3 Critical Element that works wonderfully with its affinity to really punish monsters that are weak to a particular element.

How to get Ableben Abzug:

The Ableben Abzug Heavy Bowgun is the final form of the Gore Magala tree. Here are the prerequisite crafting requirements:

  1. Queen's Longfire I: 1x Rathian Certificate S, 3x Rathian Webbing, 2x Rathian Spike+, 5x Rathian Scale+, 5000z
  2. Gravios Howl I: 2x Gravios Certificate S, 5x Gravios Wing, 3x Gravios Skull, 4x Gravios Pleura+, 10000z
  3. Tödlicher Abzug I: 3x Gore Magala Certificate S, 4x Gore Magala Ripclaw+, 1x Gore Magala Tail, 5x Frenzy Shard, 14000z
  4. Ableben Abzug: 5x Hunter Symbol Ill, 2x Gore Magala Feeler+, 1x Gore Magala Nyctgem, 5x Frenzy Crystal, 20000z

G. Aeternal Palamedes

The G. Aeternal Palamedes enjoys the joint highest raw damage of any Heavy Bowgun - and if you know what you're doing with Heavy Bowgun combos, you know that your damage can be off the scale at times. The extra damage supplied by Lv2 Tetrad Shot boost your potential even further, and the G. Aeternal Palamedes is also one of just two Heavy Bowguns (the other being the Wild Stinger) that provides you with two Lv3 gem slots for adding the strongest possible augmentations to your weapon.

How to get G. Aeternal Palamedes:

The G. Aeternal Palamedes Heavy Bowgun is the final form of the Guardian Arkveld tree. Here are the prerequisite crafting requirements:

  1. Chata Sheller I: 3x Chatacabra Scale, 2x Chatacabra Hide, 1x Chatacabra Jaw, 500z
  2. Chata Sheller II: 1x Rompopolo Claw, 2x Chatacabra Shell, 1500z
  3. G. Veldian Tormentum I: 3x Guardian Scale, 3x Guardian Pelt, 1x Guardian Blood, 2x Tough Guardian Bone, 2600z
  4. G. Veldian Tormentum II: 6x Guardian Scale+, 6x Guardian Pelt+, 3x Guardian Blood+, 1x Dragonbone Relic, 10000z
  5. G. Aeternal Palamedes: 5x Hunter Symbol Ill, 4x Arkveld Calloushell, 2x Arkveld Tail, 1x Arkveld Gem, 20000z

Gravios Gigahowl

Our final recommendation for the best Heavy Bowgun is the Gravios Gigahowl. It equals the G. Aeternal Palamedes for highest raw damage in its class, and on top of that it features easily the highest defensive capabilities of any Heavy Bowgun, which is nothing to sniff at. With such high defence, there's not much a monster can do to you to prevent you from unleashing your strongest attacks on it with ease. The only real downside is a -15% hit to your affinity, which you'll need to offset using Gems and other Skills in your equipment.

How to get Gravios Gigahowl:

The Gravios Gigahowl Heavy Bowgun is the final form of the Gravios tree. Here are the prerequisite crafting requirements:

  1. Queen's Longfire I: 1x Rathian Certificate S, 3x Rathian Webbing, 2x Rathian Spike+, 5x Rathian Scale+, 5000z
  2. Gravios Howl I: 2x Gravios Certificate S, 5x Gravios Wing, 3x Gravios Skull, 4x Gravios Pleura+, 10000z
  3. Gravios Gigahowl: 5x Hunter Symbol II, 6x Gravios Carapace, 1x Gravios Medulla, 1x Wyvern Gem, 20000z
